Many denominations with domes and towers of their churches, traditions and customs have become part of the architecture, cityscape and daily life of Vilnius. In the second half of the 16th century, Vilnius was a center of tolerance for Christian Europe. It is a border town as it was built at the crossroads of Byzantine and Roman cultures.

The Reformation (which already in the middle of the 16th century seemed to suppress Catholicism) left its mark on Vilnius. However, after the victory over the Counter-Reformation, the Protestants remained and continue to live as Lutheran and Reformed religious minorities.

In the 16th century, Jews founded a community and built a synagogue in Vilnius. Vilnius Gaon made the city a world famous center of Judaism.

There are still small but significant Muslim and Karaite communities in the capital.

In the 19th century, an Old Believer community was formed in Vilnius.

In 2008, there were 11 officially recognized religious communities in Lithuania (and in Vilnius).
